Listening is an attention filled activity and often attention is scattered and fragmented by the pressures of life. Listening is a gift we give another person and ourselves for it connects us to another human being. Use these steps to practice actively listening and reap the benefits of connection.
Stop what you are doing and focus on the person speaking
Make eye contact
If it is not a good time to listen say so and schedule a different time
Set your agenda, ideas, and responses aside
Know that you don't have to rush, it's okay to be here
Pay attention to your body language
Be open, curious and interested
"To listen is to lean in softly, with a willingness to be changed by what we hear."
