Mindful Checklist for Listening

Listening is an attention filled activity and often attention is scattered and fragmented by the pressures of life. Listening is a gift we give another person and ourselves for it connects us to another human being. Use these steps to practice actively listening and reap the benefits of connection.

  • Stop what you are doing and focus on the person speaking

  • Make eye contact

  • If it is not a good time to listen say so and schedule a different time

  • Set your agenda, ideas, and responses aside

  • Know that you don't have to rush, it's okay to be here

  • Pay attention to your body language

  • Be open, curious and interested

"To listen is to lean in softly, with a willingness to be changed by what we hear."

~Mark Nepo
